Finding My Place: A First-Time Attendee’s Experience at Professional Development Day

Last year, I attended my very first Professional Development Day as a relatively new member of the chapter—and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, even after being a part of the community and supporting the chapter as a volunteer for over a year. Walking into an environment full of project professionals at all stages of their career and across a wide spectrum of industries was both exciting and a little intimidating. But from the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with warmth and encouragement from both fellow volunteers and familiar faces  as well as the new connections I made. The energy was inspiring, and I quickly realized I was in the right place to grow, connect, and learn.

One of the most impactful parts of the day was the Business Acumen track. As someone still building my strategic mindset, the sessions helped me see how project work connects to broader organizational goals. I especially loved the session on Creating a Complaint-Free Workplace led by Wendy Babcock. It challenged me to rethink how I approach creating a positive workplace culture through self-reflection. The presenters were engaging, and I walked away with practical tools I could apply immediately.

If you're attending for the first time this year, here are a few tips I wish I had known:

  • Arrive early to settle in, grab breakfast, and meet a few people before sessions start.
  • Don’t be shy—introduce yourself to others at your table or in line. Everyone’s there to connect.
  • Choose a session track that stretches you. It’s a great chance to explore new perspectives.
  • Bring a notebook or use a notes app—you’ll want to capture the insights and ideas that come fast and often.
  • Follow up with people you meet. A quick LinkedIn message can turn a brief chat into a lasting connection.

Looking back, attending Professional Development Day was a turning point in my professional journey. It helped me see the bigger picture of project leadership and made me feel like I truly belonged in the PMI Madison community. If you're on the fence about attending—especially if you're new—I can’t recommend it enough. It’s more than a conference; it’s a kinship.
